Garth Martens was a featured reader for Swoon in April, when he read from his debut collection of poetry, Prologue for the  Age of Consequence. I recently caught up with Garth to find out a little bit more about how the book came to be and to discover more about his passion for flamenco. He’s written the libretto for an international flamenco production, Pasajes, slated for July 12 in the Royal Theatre in Victoria–if you’re on Vancouver Island, I highly encourage you to go! Anything that Garth is involved in is sure to be of the highest quality. Garth was incredibly generous with his answers in our interview, and I am so excited to share his thoughts with you! Check out the interview on the Swoon blog. There are so many quotable sentences from the interview it’s hard to choose just one to entice you, but here goes! When I asked Garth how aware he is of how a poem “should” sound when he’s writing, he treated me with this image of a poem in composition:

There’s an aural support I work toward. The poem becomes, line after line, a parapet or a deck. I’d like to think I could walk on it. When editing I reinforce that music, button it down, batten the form so the wind won’t rip it apart. I like the feeling very much.

I love the idea of walking on a poem, like a bridge. I’m sure you do, too, and there’s lots more to love on the Swoon website! Read the whole interview here, for more of Garth’s thoughts on poetry and dance–and to discover what kind of ingredients Garth would use if he could design his own chocolate truffle!

Sierra Skye Gemma, Swoon

Sierra Skye Gemma joins Ruth Daniell to create the new core team for Swoon: A Reading Series on Love & Desire!

I’m so happy that I finally get to share the amazing news that Sierra Skye Gemma has taken on the role of Swoon’s new co-host. While I am still grumpy to have lost the formidably awesome Jeffrey Ricker to St. Louis, I am SO pleased that my little-big reading series has got such an amazing new talented host. Sierra is an amazing writer and organizer, and she’s bringing so much energy, insight, and love to Swoon. Get ready, Vancouver, for our next event, coming early this fall. And in the meantime, like and share our Facebook page, follow our blog, and follow us on Twitter at @swoonvancouver. We’ll keep you up to date on all things literature, love, sex, and chocolate! Click the photo to take you to the full announcement post on the Swoon website to discover why Sierra is so excited about her new role with Swoon.

It’s been a week since Swoon: A Literary Evening of Love, Sex, and Chocolate, and I’m still feeling silly with happiness! Thank you so much to everyone who came out and made Swoon such a lovely event. It was truly a privilege to host alongside Jeffrey Ricker, and to introduce the audience to such fine writers. The Swoon website will update with photos as soon as our intrepid Swoon photographer delivers us the oodles of fun pictures he took for us! In the meantime, you can always check out the photos that I took on my iPhone and tweeted at @swoonvancouver.

What have you been doing to celebrate National Poetry Month? I gave myself the challenge to write a new poem every day for the entire month of April. I’m on day 11 and I’m having lots of fun. Especially on work days, when I don’t have time to sit and craft a poem for a long amount of time, it’s interesting to see what kind of material emerges when I am working with a time limit.

In the spirit of National Poetry Month, I’ll recommend a poem to you! I noticed that today’s Poem of the Day Podcast at Poetry Foundation is Robert Hass’s “Misery and Splendor,” which is from one of my favourite books of poetry ever, Human Wishes. You can listen and read to the poem here. Grayling

Speaking of poetry and poets… Gillian Whigmore, a poet who lives in my hometown of Prince George, BC, recently launched her first book of fiction. Last Saturday I went to the Vancouver launch and heard her read from Grayling. The novella is set in northwestern B.C.’s Dease River, and follows Jay along a canoe trip that gets more emotionally complicated when circumstances force him to take on a companion. It’s beautiful writing, and I can’t wait to read it. It’s on my nightstand along with a select few other books from my “to read” list. Also on this list are two Swooners: Garth Martens with his debut collection of poetry, Prologue for the Age of Consequence, and Jeffrey Ricker with his new YA novel, The Unwanted.

Swoon_poster_3Spring 2014’s Swoon is here! Come on out, Vancouver, for a really lovely time tonight. My co-host Jeffrey Ricker and I have been working hard to put together a fantastic literary evening of love, sex, and chocolate.  All our readers have tantalizing, sexy, sweet, lovely performances for you, and our fantastically-supportive venue, Cocoa Nymph, is ready to serve up authentic drinking chocolate. (And I’m definitely having one of their truffles, or their seasonal Easter eggs…or both. Oh, okay, probably both.) Cocoa Nymph is located at 3739 W. 10th Avenue in Kitsilano. The evening starts at 7:30pm; I advise you to arrive a little early to get yourself some treats first and find a seat. We will break mid-way through the performances for another opportunity to stock up on chocolate and chat with our authors. I am so proud of the Swoon community, and would be so thrilled to welcome you into it. Join us tonight!

You can check out our talented authors by reading their bios on our Swoon website, where you will also find our mission statement and how to become involved with Swoon–whether or not you want to contribute as a writer and performer!

You can follow us on Twitter at @swoonvancouver

Happy National Poetry Month! What kinds of poems are you reading? If you’re in Vancouver and looking for more great poetry experiences, may I humbly suggest that you check out Swoon this Friday? This Friday’s event is going to have great readings of both poetry and prose by some  absolutely fantastic writers. I’m really looking forward to what promises to be a wonderful, literary evening about love, sex, and chocolate!

Last Saturday (March 29) I participated in the celebration of UBC Bookstore’s recent renovations by performing some of my work at a special reading that included, among others, my talented colleagues Rebecca Hales, Francine Cunningham, Charles-Adam Foster-Simard, Kayla Czaga, and Jeffrey Ricker.  I read from my manuscript, The Brightest Thing, and made good on a dare to myself to read some brand new work, too–work that was kindly and enthusiastically received…. While the event’s venue turned out to be a bit chaotic–so many others events happening at once–the audience there was of the highest calibre. Thank you to everyone who came out to listen! I hope to see many of you again this Friday at Cocoa Nymph  (3739 W. 10th Avenue) for this spring’s edition of Swoon!IMG_1690IMG_1680

Thanks for reading. I hope your National Poetry Month is full of poems–and chocolate (is there a National Chocolate Month yet?)!
