You can now read another poem from my working manuscript! I am honoured that “Night Exposure” has been published in Plenitude Magazine, Canada’s queer literary magazine.
The entire team at Plenitude is kind-hearted and so supportive. I want to express my gratitude, especially, to the founder and managing editor, Andrea Routley, who you may remember was a featured reader at Swoon Fall 2014. Andrea is also the editor of Walk Myself Home: An Anthology to End Violence Against Women, an important book that Caitlin Press released in 2010 and in which I also have a poem.
Plenitude recently changed its mandate and is now delivering all content online, free and accessible to everyone. Andrea explains the reasons for this change in this excellent article—”The Problem with Looking Good“—that she posted early January. Andrea explains the challenges, especially the financial challenges, of running a literary magazine and supporting fellow artists. Much of what she says is also true of running a reading series, and the article really hit home to me both as the founder of Swoon and as an artist trying to reach my own audience. Please support the magazines that support the writers that you want to support. You can do that by buying print copies of the magazines that publish the authors you love, and by reading and sharing the content that is offered online, as with Plenitude. Print journals need people to subscribe and buy issues of the magazine in order to continue, and online journals like Plenitude rely on your Internet views. For online publications, granting organizations look at web traffic instead of numbers of subscribers, so the best way you can help them is super fun: by visiting the site regularly and reading the new content by talented authors!
I hope you like “Night Exposure“; if you do, please share the link and spread the news!
