July 15 turned out to be an exciting day because not only was I still feeling dreamy about seeing my work in print in Arc but issue eight of (parenthetical) launched online– a day early! (You can also buy print copies!) One of my short stories appears within its pages! It’s called “Mermaid in the Seine” and it is weird and magical and I think you will like it!

parenthetical issue eight

“Mermaid in the Seine” was inspired, in part, by a bottle of wine that I purchased several months ago. As you probably already know, one of my interests as a writer is fairy tales, so I tend to notice anything with a princess or a frog or a witch or a monster on it… It’s no surprise, really, that I decided to buy a bottle of wine because of its pretty mermaid label.

The next thing I did was email my pal Jeffrey Ricker, with a snapshot of the bottle, lamenting that he was too far away to drink it with me. He replied with an offhand remark that perhaps drinking that bottle of wine would turn us into mermaids… And something about that idea stuck. (What’s that saying? Good writers borrow? Great writers steal? Ah, well.)

Anyway, speaking of fairy tales and happy endings–it must have been fate that the story was published when it was, right when Jeffrey was actually back in Vancouver for a good long visit–with enough time for us to open up a bottle of wine together. (Not to mention eat at the majority of Vancouver’s best gourmet ice cream shoppes….)

Go check out (parenthetical) right now! It’s filled with lots of other really lovely writing; there’s already a couple poems in there that are new favourites for me. And besides which, its editors–Nicole Brewer and William Kemp–are some of the nicest folks you’ll have the pleasure of supporting. Their emails to me about my weird magical mermaid story were some of the kindest emails I’ve ever received!

EAT issue

Just in time for the Easter weekend, my short story about the Eucharist is now published online with Synaesthesia Magazine! “Daily Bread” is from a collection of short stories about food and love that I have been working on the past couple years, and I am super excited that it’s been published in Synaesthesia Magazine‘s EAT issue. I am so impressed with the beautiful illustrations in this issue, and especially pleased with the image that artist Miranda Foxx created for my story. Check out the whole issue! It’ll make you hungry!

April also means that it’s National Poetry Month! And this year, the League of Canadian Poets are inspired by the theme of food! According to their website, they got the idea from Rachel Rose’s inaugural speech as Vancouver’s Poet Laureate: “Everyone has something to say about food, whether it is the activist challenging the cruelties of conventional farming, the exile remembering the waft of spices on lost streets, or the child writing about the sockeye salmon she buys at Granville Island. Food is personal, political, sensual, and powerful.”

I’m certainly going to try my hand at some food-themed poems this month! Are you?

IMG_7546Arc Poetry Magazine bannerI’m excited to announce that I have work forthcoming in Arc Poetry Magazine! Look for “Sorrow Halved: Parts I & II” in issue 77 this summer. Arc is one of the best and most-respected lit journals out there, and I am absolutely over the moon to have work published by them!

I also have a couple newly-polished poems coming out in issue 5 of Dreamland, a new journal based out of my hometown of Prince George, BC, and edited by Jeremy Stewart. Have you ever wanted to read poetry about old trucks? Watch out for “Poem Featuring a 1994 Toyota Tacoma” and “Another Poem Featuring a 1994 Toyota Tacoma.”

Also keep an eye out for new fiction! I have two short stories coming out this spring: “Daily Bread” with Synaesthesia Magazine and “Colossal” with Vending Machine Press.

It’s an astonishing early spring here in Vancouver. My crocuses and tulips are poking out, my hydrangeas have new green, and my daffodils have already bloomed! I am particularly delighted that it looks as though my young blueberry bushes will bear fruit this year.

Blue Moon Chocolate

The Blue Moon by Koko Monk, a dark chocolate and blue cheese truffle. Unusual but worth it. Photo from the Koko Monk website.

Former Swoon co-host Jeffrey Ricker is a two-time novelist, a prolific short story writer, budding poet, and an all-around awesome person. I recently caught up with him online on behalf of Swoon to find out what he’s been working on since he moved away from Vancouver, and to find out what he’s doing for Valentine’s Day this year. Now you can go read the interview!

We talk about books, writing poetry versus fiction, chocolate, and Valentine’s Day plans, among other things. You should go check it out!

And if you live in Vancouver, you should really check out Koko Monk, one of the chocolate shops that Jeffrey and I mention during our conversation. Although no other chocolate shop will ever have the place in my heart that Cocoa Nymph does (Rachel Sawatsky, the chocolatier, doesn’t have a retail place anymore but it was the place where Swoon was born), Koko Monk is amazing. It’s one of the best places in the world to get hot chocolate (according to me and also this list of 27 hot chocolates on Buzzfeed) and is always a highlight for me when I participate as an enthusiastic taste-tester in Vancouver’s Hot Chocolate Festival, which is ongoing until Valentine’s Day. I’d love to know what your favourite hot chocolate flavours are–please comment here or tweet at me! In addition to Koko Monk in Kitsliano, I also recommend the adorable Chocolaterie de la Nouvelle France over on Main Street. And for the best crêpes I’ve had since Paris, go to French Made Baking.

Have a lovely and chocolately Valentine’s Day, friends!

Swoon - BannerThe next Swoon event is forthcoming on April 25! Save the date!
